Whether it’s “Low Energy” Jeb Bush, Elizabeth “Pocahontas” Warren, or Robert “Punchy” De Niro, getting a nickname from President Trump means you have arrived. It’s not so much a status symbol as it an acknowledgement from Trump that you are a ridiculous person, but it’s still something. Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal, who lied about his service during the Vietnam War, caught the President’s attention and will forever be known as “Da Nang” Blumenthal.
Last week during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing with Brett Kavanaugh, Blumenthal accused the Supreme Court nominee of lying without providing any evidence of a lie.
“Falsus in uno, falsus in omnibus. It means ‘False in one thing, false in everything,’” Blumenthal said to Kavanaugh.
This was a very condescending attempt to portray Kavanaugh as a liar, but Blumenthal had no actual proof that the nominee had ever made a false statement. There was however one liar involved in this exchange and it was the Connecticut democrat. On several occasions Blumenthal has misrepresented his military service, falsely claiming that he served in Vietnam.
“When we returned [from Vietnam], we saw nothing like this,” Blumenthal said in 2003.
“We have learned something important since the days I served in Vietnam,” Blumenthal said in 2008.
“I served during the Vietnam era. I remember the taunts, the insults, sometimes even the physical abuse,” Blumenthal said at the Vietnam War memorial in Washington DC.
But the truth of the matter is, Blumenthal never served in Vietnam. He was never in the country, didn’t see any combat, and certainly didn’t return from there to be taunted and attacked by anti-war hippies. Between 1965 and 1970 Blumenthal received at least 5 military deferments. Eventually he joined the Marine Corps Reserves and served stateside, never once setting foot in Southeast Asia.
After getting caught lying about his service, Blumenthal gave a pseudo apology in which he attacked anyone who questioned his integrity and honesty:
“On a few occasions I have misspoken about my service and I regret that and I take full responsibility. But I will not allow anyone to take a few misplaced words and impugn my record of service to our country,” said Blumenthal in 2010.
But wait a second, Blumenthal established the rule that if you lie about one thing, you lie about everything. Clearly he lied about his Vietnam War record, so he must be lying about everything else and certainly shouldn’t be questioning Brett Kavanaugh’s truthfulness.
Enter Donald J. Trump. At a rally on Monday, the President addressed the glaring hypocrisy as reported by Fox News:
“You have the great Vietnam War hero—who didn’t go to Vietnam—[Sen. Richard] Blumenthal. How about Blumenthal? We call him ‘Da Nang Blumenthal,” said Trump.
I would have went with “Lying Sack of Shit” Blumenthal or “Stolen Valor” Blumenthal, but “Da Nang” Blumenthal is pretty good too when you consider what he lied about.
“For 15 years as the attorney general of Connecticut, he went around telling war stories. ‘People dying left and right—but my platoon marched forward!’ He was never in Vietnam. It was a lie. And then he’s up there saying, ‘We want the truth from Judge Kavanaugh.’ And you’re getting the truth from Judge Kavanaugh,” said Trump.
I’ve said it a thousand times, if democrats weren’t full of shit, they’d be empty. Blumenthal is just one of many democratic senators on the Judiciary Committee who has no room to attack Brett Kavanaugh. Cory Booker has admitted to sexually assaulting a drunk girl in high school, Dianne Feinstein employed a Chinese spy, and Sheldon Whitehouse did some insider trading to profit off of ObamaCare.
