North Carolina City Approves Slave Reparations For Black People

Exciting news! The city of Asheville just voted to give black people slave reparations. Before black people start moving to this North Carolina city to get them some of those sweet reparations dollars, they should know this is a completely meaningless gesture that comes with no cash payments whatsoever. In reality it’s not all that exciting but it makes for a feel-good headline that liberals can pat themselves on the back over. “We’re fixing racism.”

The Citizen Times reports: In historic move, Asheville approves reparations for Black residents

In an extraordinary move, the City Council has apologized for the city’s historic role in slavery, discrimination and denial of basic liberties to Black residents and voted to provide reparations to them and their descendants.

The 7-0 vote came the night of July 14.

“Hundreds of years of black blood spilled that basically fills the cup we drink from today. It is simply not enough to remove statutes. Black people in this country are dealing with issues that are systemic in nature,” said Keith Young, one of two black people on the city council.

While this is toted as “historic” and “extraordinary” perhaps “lame” is a better description:

The unanimously passed resolution does not mandate direct payments. Instead it will make investments in areas where Black residents face disparities.

“The resulting budgetary and programmatic priorities may include but not be limited to increasing minority home ownership and access to other affordable housing, increasing minority business ownership and career opportunities, strategies to grow equity and generational wealth, closing the gaps in health care, education, employment and pay, neighborhood safety and fairness within criminal justice,” reads the resolution.

Keep in mind that resolutions are not laws, so this thing is even more underwhelming.

The resolution calls on the city to create the Community Reparations Commission, inviting community groups and other local governments to join. It will be the commission’s job to make concrete recommendations for programs and resources to be used.

Ooo, a commission? That’s sounds like it will result in absolutely nothing.

Councilwoman Sheneika Smith, who is Black, said the council had gotten emails from those “asking, ‘Why should we pay for what happened during slavery?'”

Good question. Too bad Sheneika didn’t answer it. She did say however that all white people need to pony up for reparations even if their ancestors had nothing to do with slavery.

“(Slavery) is this institution that serves as the starting point for the building of the strong economic floor for white America, while attempting to keep Blacks subordinate forever to its progress,” said Sheneika.

The news claims that most Asheville residents support this stupid thing, but they only gave one instance of pro-reparations while there were clearly more than one anti-reparations voices:

A few callers spoke against reparations, one linking it to a Venezuelan government plot and others saying Black Lives Matter was Marxist.

“My white privilege is I grew up on a farm, we milked cows, we bailed hay. That was my white privilege,” said a man identifying himself as Eddy from West Asheville.

I think once black residents realize this isn’t even close to reparations they’ll be against it too. Where’s the cash, motherf*ckers? This doesn’t even come with a gift card to Waffle House or anything.
