Don’t worry, this case won’t become another Trayvon Martin kind of thing, because the shooter isn’t a “white Hispanic” but rather black. A man in Florida has been charged with attempted murder because he shot a burglar. It’s a little more complicated because he actually chased the scumbag down and pumped him full of lead. This will certainly be a test of the state’s “Stand Your Ground” law.
The Miami Herad reports:
Corthoris Jenkins was playing video games in his bedroom earlier this week when a suspected burglar burst into his North Miami-Dade efficiency. But Jenkins didn’t just call 911.
Instead, police say, Jenkins grabbed an assault-style rifle, chased the unarmed burglar from the home and ran after him down the street, where the man fell to his knees.
What in God’s name is an “assault-stle rifle?” And for that matter, what the hell is a “Corthoris?”
“He begins to what appears to be to beg for his life. But the defendant takes the assault rifle and shoots him multiple times,” Miami-Dade Detective Iry Watson said to the judge.
The Miami Herald said it was an “assault-style Rifle” but this detective said it was an actual assault rifle. What gives? I guess it doesn’t matter since neither of those things exist.
The suspected burglar, Xavier West, remains hospitalized at Ryder Trauma Center after he was wounded Tuesday afternoon on Northwest 27th Avenue at 95th Street.
Whatever happens in this case, it totally blows the liberal position that assault weapons were designed to kill as many people possible as fast as possible. If the reports are accurate, Jenkins shot this burglar several times, while he was on his knees begging for his life and yet the burglar survived. Maybe this was because it was only an assault-style rifle and not an actual assault rifle. Who knows?
Jenkins was arrested and charged with first-degree attempted murder — Jenkins initially claimed he “blacked out” and didn’t remember anything about the shooting, according to a police arrest report.
But during a court hearing Wednesday afternoon, Jenkins appeared to admit to the shooting.
“I didn’t shoot him while he was on the ground. I’m the victim, ma’am,” said Jenkins to the judge.
“You’re the victim of a potential burglary, but you can’t just go around shooting people,” replied Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer.
Well, this did happen in Florida and the state does have a “Stand Your Ground” law, so maybe he can go around shooting people. The Stand Your Ground law says that a person has no duty to retreat from a threatening situation and may use deadly force if necessary. It’s unclear if the law forbids running after someone to shoot them so this may end up being a precedent setting case.
I think Jenkins is screwed and will be convicted, but I’m rooting for him. If more people were shot while trying to commit burglary, less people would do it. I guarantee that when Xavier West gets out of the hospital, the last thing he will want to do is try to burglarize another home.
The only thing that could save Jenkins at this point is if Xavier West is not black. If that is the case, Al Sharpton will raise a big racial stink and claim that because “white Hispanic” George Zimmerman was legally allowed to shoot black Trayvon Martin then black Corthoris Jenkins should be legally allowed to shoot “white Hispanic” Xavier West. If Xavier West is black, Jenkins is doomed.
