Last year, then-president Donald Trump said he was going to withdraw all U.S. troops from Afghanistan, which caused a collective freak-out from the democrats. Yesterday current illegitimate president Joe Biden said he is going to withdraw all U.S. troops from Afghanistan, which was met with applause from democrats who praised his bold leadership. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued statements regarding both presidential announcements because she wants a public record of how full of crap she is.
Let’s dive right in. This is from Pelosi’s statement when Trump announced the troop withdrawal in 2020:
Our military and allies deserve strong, smart and strategic leadership to protect America’s security and that of the region. America went into Afghanistan with NATO, and it is concerning that Trump’s withdrawal is being carried out without the close and comprehensive coordination of NATO. It is important to note that NATO is a key partner contributing over half of the troop presence in Afghanistan. This hasty withdrawal does not appear to have a strategic plan that adequately anticipates contingencies, especially related to terrorism and the protection of our military, diplomats and development presence.
As NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg warned today, ‘The price for leaving too soon or in an uncoordinated way could be very high. Afghanistan risks becoming once again a platform for international terrorists to plan and organize attacks on our homelands. And ISIS could rebuild in Afghanistan the terror caliphate it lost in Syria and Iraq.’
Last November it was a hasty withdrawal that put out troops in danger and would leave us less safe because of terrorism. Today, Pelosi’s statement had a decidedly more positive view of bringing our troops home because Biden proposed it:
The Biden Administration’s announced timeline for the safe, strategic and orderly departure of American troops from Afghanistan is an important and welcomed development. As Speaker, I support this transition and President Biden’s leadership to protect the safety of our troops and the security of the American people, which must be our priority.
In 6 short months, withdrawing troops from Afghanistan went from dangerous and irresponsible to a welcomed development.
Back when Trump was president, bringing the troops home would erase all of our “hard-won gains” in Afghanistan:
We can ill afford to lose the hard-won gains in the pillars of security, economic development and governance made in Afghanistan.
But now that Biden is occupying the White House, the same thing will protect our hard-won gains:
The United States Congress remains committed to advancing peace and security in Afghanistan and the region, including an inclusive Afghan government that respects the human rights of all its people. It is imperative that the hard-won gains secured by and for Afghan women and girls are not erased. Congress will be working closely with the Administration to ensure that our support for our Afghan partners remains strong and that this transition is orderly and made in coordination with our allies.
Finally, in the Trump statement Pelosi said she wanted to bring the troops back, but not at that time:
We always want to bring our troops home and look forward to welcoming them back to American shores safely as soon as possible.
Under Biden, Pelosi believes the time is now to bring back the troops:
As we mark twenty years since the tragedy of September 11, we look forward to welcoming our heroic troops back to American shores safely as soon as possible.
Obviously Pelosi saved time from having to write an entirely new statement by just hitting the “opposite” button on Microsoft Word. These statements are remarkably similar other than she’s praising Biden for the same thing she condemned Trump for.
It’s also painfully clear how completely full of shit Nancy Pelosi is. If bringing our troops home was dangerous and foolish in November 2020 its should also be that way 6 months later in April 2021. Joe Biden can’t a bold leader doing the exact thing Donald Trump did, which she characterized as irresponsible leadership.
