Crime has exploded in Los Angeles and San Francisco because the DAs of those cities simply stopped prosecuting most crimes. The new DA for Manhattan took a look at those experiments in stupidity and thought it might work in the Big Apple. Newly sworn in DA, Alvin Bragg, announced that he is basically decriminalize most crime as means to make the city “safer.”
In one hell of a bonkers memo, Alvin Bragg announced that crime fighting is no longer a thing at the District Attorney’s office. Among other things, he called for the immediate decriminalization/non-prosecution for crimes like marijuana possession, turnstile jumping, trespassing, resisting arrest, interfering with an arrest and prostitution.
Additionally, Bragg will no longer seek jail sentences for any crime except for murder and assault with a deadly weapon that results in serious injury.
“Reserving incarceration for matters involving significant harm will make us safer,” wrote Bragg.
Some of the fun things that will no longer result in a jail sentence are: burglary, car theft, armed robbery as long as you don’t shoot someone, beating the shit out of people with your bare hands, and presumably rape. Bragg doesn’t specifically say he won’t seek jail time for rape, but given the conditions he laid out, it looks like sexual assault is a non-jailable offense.
Of the cases he will seek incarceration, Bragg will not go for anything more than 20 years in prison. Since criminals usually serve around a third of their sentence, that means that first-degree murderers will get out in 7 years or less.
Bragg is also eliminating pretrial incarceration for everyone but the “most serious cases.”
All of this adds up to a near-complete decriminalization of crime in NYC. The place is already experiencing a historic surge in crime and now shit’s going to get much worse.
Although, if you stop arresting and prosecuting most crime, it will look on paper like crime is going way down. The people of NYC won’t be any safer, but the books will show a dramatic drop in crime.
Compounding things is the fact that NYC doesn’t allow people to keep and bear arms, so no one will be able to protect themselves from the crime wave Bragg has just unleashed. NYC is now the perfect place for criminals and predators. Almost nothing is illegal and everyone is unarmed.
Seriously, where’s incentive to obey the law? Why should anyone pay for something at a store when they can steal it instead? Go eat a meal at a fancy restaurant and just walk out without paying. It’s totally not illegal anymore. Want to get hammered for free? Steal some alcohol from a bodega. The cops won’t even show up.
Bragg laid out all of these “reforms” because as he wrote, “I have dedicated my career to the inextricably linked goals of safety and fairness.”
We already know the only people who will be safe under his plan are criminals, but what about the fairness thing? Is it fair that people will be victimized with no chance of getting justice?
Crime had been on a steady decline since the all-time high of the early 1990’s because criminals were put in jail. Now that “racial justice” and “justice reform” have liberal DAs not putting criminals in jail, crime is on the rise. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out the link.
