Vehicle Pulled Over by Police for Speeding—Dog Moved to Driver Seat by Drunk-Driving Suspect Who Claimed the Dog Was Driving

Police reported a vehicle was stopped in Colorado for speeding Saturday night—oddly, however, the driver was observed switching seats with his dog by putting his pet in the driver seat and attempting to shift the blame.

Police reported:

The driver was then seen exiting the vehicle from the passenger side, before insisting that he had not been the one driving.

According to a Facebook post by Springfield Police in southeastern Colorado:

A police officer watched the entirety of the bizarre attempt unfold, witnessing the driver trying to put his pet behind the wheel as he maneuvered to the other side of the car.

According to the police department, the driver showed clear signs of intoxication, and ran away when asked how much he had had to drink.

According to the police report:

The driver was apprehended within 20 yards of the vehicle.

Police found that the driver had two active warrants for his arrest, and he was booked into the Baca County Jail.

He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving while ability impaired, driving under suspension, speeding, and resisting arrest.

Springfield Police Department stated:

The dog [name and age not provided] was released to an acquaintance of the driver to be looked after while the suspect was in jail.

Police further reported:

The man was charged with a DUI, while the dog was let go with just a warning.

Final thought: Golden Retrievers are smart dogs. You’d think he’d have known better than to ride with a drunk driver. They are loyal dogs too. Perhaps that was why he was in the vehicle.
