In 2015, Ross Ulbricht was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for creating and operating the dark web marketplace Silk Road.

Final thoughts: I can imagine some Def-Con News readers are thinking, ‘Commutation of a felon’s life sentence is not news.’ And perhaps it isn’t news.
However, consider the fact that although Ross Ulbricht had created a black-market marketplace for a wide variety of illegal transactions including the sale and purchase of illegal goods and controlled substances, he also created a marketplace for transactions to be made without detection by Big Brother, i.e., everyone’s identity was kept secret.
I submit this was the rationale for the arrest, conviction, and two lifetime sentences for Ross Ulbricht.
