UPDATE: Here’s more on the bombings from the New York Times:
Israeli fighter jets bombed sites in Yemen affiliated with the Iran-backed Houthi militia on Saturday in retaliation for a deadly drone attack in Tel Aviv a day earlier, according to four U.S. officials and two regional officials. It was the first time Israel has publicly attacked the group in months of escalating tensions.
The Israeli airstrikes targeted gas and oil depots and a power station in the area of Yemen’s Red Sea port of Hodeidah, the two regional sources said. The port is controlled by the Houthis and is the site of oil export facilities, but it is also a vital conduit for civilian goods and humanitarian aid to impoverished Yemen.
There was no immediate comment by the Israeli military.
Nasruddin Amer, a Houthi spokesman, wrote on social media after the Israeli bombardment that the group’s position on Gaza would not change.
Mr. Amer vowed:
Yemen’s operations in support of Gaza will not stop. The response to this aggression is inevitable.
UPDATE 2: The IDF confirms the strike on Yemen:
TIMES OF ISRAEL—The Israel Defense Forces in a statement confirms it carried out airstrikes in Yemen a short while ago.
The IDF stated:
Fighter jets struck military targets of the Houthi terror regime in the area of the Al Hudaydah Port in Yemen, in response to the hundreds of attacks carried out against the State of Israel in recent months
The military says there is no change to instructions for Israeli civilians.
Prime Minister Netanyahu underscored that the strike on the al-Hudaydah port, which was used by the Houthis as an entry point for its weapons supplies, was a “direct response” to Friday’s deadly drone attack in Tel Aviv launched by the Houthis in Yemen in which an Israeli citizen was killed, and to the Houthis’ “aggression against Israel since the start of the war.”
The port we attacked is not an innocent port. It was used for military purposes, it was used as an entry point for deadly weapons supplied to the Houthis by Iran. And they used that weaponry to attack Israel, to attack the states of the region, and to attack some of the world’s most important shipping lanes.
Further:
For the past eight months, the Houthis have launched hundreds of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones against Israel.
Netanyahu thanked the U.S. and other countries for their help in intercepting Houthi projectiles throughout this period.
Netanyahu explained:
Like Hamas and Hezbollah, the Houthis are an integral part of Iran’s axis of evil. This axis works not only against Israel; it threatens the peace of the entire world.
And Israel expects the international community to increase its efforts against Iran and its proxies, to thwart Iran’s aggression and to protect international freedom of navigation.
God speed to the IDF.
