Red Bluff police release body cam footage of officer-involved shooting

The Red Bluff Police Department has posted a video on YouTube detailing the events leading up to the shooting that left 42 year old Henry Lane dead. The video includes body cam footage from each of the officers at the scene.

The video, titled “Red Bluff P.D. Critical Incident Video Release – Officer Involved Shooting 4/14/2019” starts with Red Bluff Police Chief Kyle Sanders addressing the camera and telling viewers why the department is releasing the video.

“This briefing is designed to show you evidence in our ongoing investigation, including audio recordings, radio transmission recordings, and video from our body worn cameras so you can have a better understanding of what occurred during this incident.”

Sanders goes on to say the investigation is not complete, and may take up to ten months to finish, noting, “It’s also important to note that we don’t draw any final conclusions as to whether the officers’ actions are consistent with our police and the law until all the facts.”

The video is a compilation of recordings, including a call to 9-1-1 an hour before the shooting where people report a man wearing gray was banging on a local business yelling, saying he wanted a gun and also saying something about a knife. Lt. Matt Hansen says police now believe Lane was the man reported in that call.

He wanted a gun but was only able to arm himself with a stick. Too bad for him, but great for us. If he had procured a gun this might have turned out very differently and we wouldn’t be able to enjoy the happy ending.

The department then shows video from the body cameras of three officers at the scene. The video shows Lane with the stick walking away from officers, at times he was quite far away.

You hear officers repeatedly ask him to drop the stick he is carrying and he refuses. Later, they yell at him that he is under arrest and begin chasing him down the road, eventually cornering him against what appears to be an overpass on Antelope, which is where the fatal encounter takes place.

They repeatedly ask him to drop the stick and each time he responds with, “[expletive] you.” They shoot him with bean bags to no avail.

Eventually, one officer approaches him with a Tazer in one hand and a service weapon in the other, right next to each other, pointed at Lane. Other officers’ body camera shows Lane swinging the stick around.

Really, you can’t say these guys didn’t try their best to subdue this beast without resorting to gunfire. But like a determined dog, he just wouldn’t let go of his beloved stick. Bad dog! Give me the stick!

A single shot is fired and Lane falls to the ground, groaning. As officers yell at him to stay there, he gets up, staggers into the street, and falls again. They cuff him, and then one officer goes to retrieve first aid gear, eventually getting gloves and beginning CPR. Lane is later pronounced dead at the hospital.

We want to warn you, the video is graphic. You can watch it here.

Meh. Consider us warned. The only thing disturbing about this video is that it’s so damn long. Skip to 12:39 to get to the action. Bam! One shot and plenty of blood! We even get to see the thug die in slow motion! Want to see him die again? Skip to 16:29. Want to see him die a third time? Skip to 18:09!

One shot, one kill. Well done! No expensive trial and no stay in prison at tax payer’s expense for this scumbag. Total cost of justice being served here? I don’t know. I’d estimate that one round cost about 25 cents. Now that’s some cost effective law enforcement!
