Trump Wins One on Immigration

Via American Greatness

Tariffs don’t work. Or so the talking heads kept saying. We watched for days as Democrats and Republicans lambasted President Trump’s threat to impose steeper and steeper tariffs on Mexico unless and until that country takes concrete action to stem the tide of illegal immigrants crossing into the United States.

“I think it’s both bad politically and bad economically and I don’t think it’s really going to help solve the immigration problem, either, which is what Mr. Trump said he’s trying to attack,” said John Negroponte, the former U.S. ambassador to Honduras, Mexico, the Philippines, the United Nations, and Iraq.

“This is a stunningly stupid idea on many levels,” wrote Eric Boehm at the libertarian Reason magazine. “Making it more expensive to import goods from Mexico is a pretty roundabout way to get Mexico to change its border policies.”

“Mr. Trump is blaming Mexico for a mess it can’t solve,” the Wall Street Journal editorialized.

Well, now we know.

Late Friday, President Trump announced that an agreement was reached to suspend the threatened tariffs “indefinitely” in exchange for Mexico agreeing to house many of the illegal immigrants who are overtaxing America’s broken asylum system. Instead of releasing so-called asylum-seekers into the interior of the United States, often never to be seen again, tens of thousands will remain in Mexico while they await their court dates.

Clearly, the threat of tariffs works very well.

Mexican military begins arresting migrants riding ‘The Beast’ train to US border

Via The Washington Examiner

Mexican military deployed throughout the country as part of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s vow to do more to apprehend migrants headed to the United States, have officially begun targeting foreigners who have hitched rides aboard a freight train known as “The Beast” to get to the U.S.-Mexico border, local media reported Sunday.

Mexican National Guard held up the “La Bestia” train in an unpopulated area near Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, a city north of the Mexico-Guatemala border, where migrants have been crossing into the country.

The operation marked the first of its kind since López Obrador and President Trump reached a deal late Friday, in which the U.S. would hold off on tariffs against Mexican imports if the government did more to prevent people from traveling through the country.

“The National Guard was placed on one side, moment that was taken advantage of by more than 200 migrants who got off the train and fled,” Nataniel Hernández Núñe, director of the Digna Ochoa Human Rights Center, told El Universal.

Many “hid in the bush, so only 25 were arrested,” Hernández said.

Time for the LGBT Movement to Leave the Kids Alone

Via The American Thinker

This summer, PBS Kids premiered an episode of the children’s show Arthur in which a teacher, Mr. Ratburn, “marries” another male character. Even before this premiere, PBS was already infusing the LGBT agenda into its programming. In between its shows, a happy song about families included an image of two dads with a baby and lyrics to that effect.

Disney and other children’s stations long ago jumped onto the LGBT bandwagon with their line-up. As a Guardian headline noted in 2016, “From Nickelodeon to Disney: Children’s TV leads the way for LGBT characters,” with same-sex unions featuring prominently in shows. It is not just television, of course. Rumors now fly that even Elsa of Frozen may be a lesbian in the Disney sequel.

In fact, if you have a preschooler or early elementary-school child nowadays, you will find same-sex sexual relationships, as well as transgender advocacy, advertised throughout your children’s media and public programming. Children’s libraries promote drag queen story hours, and schools inculcate transgender ideas in kindergartners and early elementary children to the point where children in Brisbane are afraid to use the words “girl” and “boy” in a doctor’s office and parents have to sue schools to stop teachers from grooming their impressionable kids. The LGBT agenda push on young children in the West is in full swing.

Feds: Leftist Tech Reporter Peter Bright Arrested for Soliciting Child Sex Online

Via Breitbart News

Leftist Ars Technica journalist and male feminist Peter Bright has been arrested for soliciting sex from a minor online. According to the FBI, Bright sought sex with a 7-year-old and a 9-year-old.
The Daily Dot reports that far-left male feminist and Ars Technica reporter Peter Bright has been arrested on charges of soliciting sex from a minor via the Internet. According to a federal complaint, Bright sought to molest a 7-year-old and a 9-year-old and met with an undercover agent in an attempt to do so, Bright was then arrested. Even more worrying is that in chat logs between Bright and the undercover agent, Bright alleges that he’s currently in a sexual relationship with an 11-year-old.

The complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York alleges that Bright met with an undercover FBI special agent who made contact with Bright via the social media fetish platform KinkD on April 18. Bright communicated via the platform with the username “randomanon” and responded to a message that the agent posted on the platform a day earlier in which he posed as a mother seeking to find someone who would teach her children about the “birds and the bees.”

In later messages, the agent alleged to be the mother of a 7-year-old daughter and a 9-year-old son. Bright and the agent allegedly communicated via WhatsApp for weeks; Bright regularly discussed molesting both children and raping the 7-year-old while sending graphic photos of his genitalia and test results that showed he did not have any sexually transmitted infections. The complaint shows that both the agent and Bright referred to plans to molest the children as “teaching” them “lessons,” and Bright described how he would escalate his contact with the child into more intense sexual acts.

Bright allegedly stated: “I’m thinking maybe something involving foreskin is the way to start.” Bright allegedly asked if the “lessons” would be heteronormative when the agent posing as the mother of the children stated that she did not understand, Bright stated: “Does [the Girl] eat flowers and [the Boy] suck snake.” Bright’s Twitter bio states that he is “Poly/pan/pervy.”

Oberlin College’s identity crisis led to its Gibson’s Bakery train wreck

Via Legal Insurrection

Sometimes it is the simplest explanations that explain best what some see as very complex.

As a journalist who has following the Gibson Bakery racial accusation case for more than two years now – and who was able to cover it from a courtroom seat for the last month or so for Legal Insurrection – I see things from a perspective that is both factually based and less emotional politically. What it is, not what I wish it were.

As you all know, last Friday the jury awarded $11.2 million in compensatory damages. The punitive damages phase of the trial will be done Tuesday. Ohio law caps punitive civil case monetary awards at double what the compensatory damages were. That means the jury can award in this final phase be between zero and $22 million more to Gibson’s Bakery & Market and family, in addition to the $11 million they have already awarded.

There are two things about this case that are very important, of which some of the commenters and tweets I read are missing.

The first is that Oberlin College, in the minds of the jury, wasn’t guilty only of what they did, but also what they didn’t do. They had opportunities early on to see the bullshit flying in their faces — thrown by the social justice warrior students – and didn’t have the good sense to see a basic problem and recognize the simplest of solutions.

What happened here is that Oberlin College and many universities have lost the understanding of their identity and basic purpose, and when that happens with most of us, when we don’t know who we are, we tend to do stupid things. That’s what happened here.

A few years ago, they had students saying they wanted finals cancelled because they were protesting minority men being shot by police in nearby Cleveland; in Dec. of 2015, the school’s black student union published 14 pages of racial accusations against the school with 58 demands to fix them; and the school had students thinking that the sushi in their cafeteria was “cultural appropriation” and unfit for eating because of that.

Instead of the school telling their students, “You are all crazy, and get back to studying,” they took on the “these poor snowflakes need our support” attitude.

Oberlin College insurer likely to reject coverage for Gibson Bakery $11 million verdict

Via Legal Insurrection

A jury has awarded Gibson’s Bakery and its owners $11 million in compensatory damages against Oberlin College, for libel, intentional interference with business, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The punitive damage hearing next week could add another $22 million, bringing the total to $33 million.

There will be post-trial motions to set aside the jury verdict and/or reduce the dollar amounts, and then appeals. So while the Gibson family won a major victory, it is not over.

An obvious question, and one a lot of people have been asking, is whether the college has liability insurance to cover the verdict.

Based on court filings obtained by Legal Insurrection Foundation, it appears that the insurer, Lexington Insurance Company, is likely to disclaim coverage for the intentional torts which gave rise to the verdict.

The likelihood of refusal to cover the verdict was revealed in a May 1, 2019, Motion to Intervene(pdf.)(full embed at bottom of post) filed by Lexington Insurance Company.

The purpose of the motion, according to Lexington, was “for the limited purpose of submitting interrogatories to the jury in order to determine facts at issue in this action that would impact coverage under its policy.”
