Polling at just 1% Beto O’Rourke thought he could jumpstart his presidential campaign by threatening to take everyone’s legally-owned firearms. “Hell yes we’re taking your AR-15” has become his official campaign slogan but he hasn’t explained how he would suspend the 2nd Amendment and then confiscate tens of millions of guns from people who really don’t want to give them up. The closest he has come to policy specific on this is he said simply, “Americans will comply with the law.” Good luck with that.
O’Rourke did an AMA (Ask Me Anything” on Reddit and by all accounts it was pretty hilarious. He got pounded with down votes and people were asking him all kinds of things he refused to answer. This was easily the best:
“How do you expect to win the presidency when you couldn’t even beat the zodiac killer in an election?”
The closest thing he got to a serious question that he was willing to answer was: “How will you confiscate the millions of AR-15s?
Get ready for a hilarious answer:
“Americans will comply with the law. It will be a mandatory buyback of AR-15, AK-47s, weapons designed for war. Because we understand that theres no reason for any of us to own a weapon thattwas designed to kill people on a battlefield,” wrote O’Rourke.
Obviously AR-15s and semi-auto AK-type weapons weren’t designed for the battlefield, but holy crap, he honestly believes he can pass an unconstitutional law and everyone will comply with it?
Has he ever heard of crime? There’s a ton of it out there and it comes from people, many of whom are Americans, not complying with the law. If people currently don’t comply with our laws, what makes him think they will suddenly comply with his “mandatory buyback” law?
Prohibitions have an even lower rate of compliance than things like don’t “steal shit or kill folks.” Banning alcohol did nothing to stop the consumption of alcohol and banning drugs hasn’t stopped people from getting high. There are no specific Constitutional Amendments protecting the people’s right to get wasted, but there is one guaranteeing that the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. A gun prohibition in this country would be the least complied with law in U.S. history.
As it turns out, O’Rourke thinks that if he were president, everyone would be so enamored of him that they’d obey his every wish. He took another question about his “open border” plans and said he would protect our borders with the honor system.
Beto was asked how he would keep every third-world scumbag from coming here and turning our country into a shithole welfare state if the borders are not protected and illegal entry was decriminalized.
He didn’t actually answer the question, but did say that he would grant amnesty to all illegal aliens and create an easy path to citizenship for future border crossers. Then he said this:
“We should expect anyone coming to this country follows our laws and respects our borders,” O’Rourke wrote.
Again, they ain’t doing it now, so why would illegal aliens suddenly find a respect for the law when there would be no consequence for breaking it? If there is no enforcement of the law there is also no compliance with it. It’s that simple.
Beto O’Rourke’s dangerously naive attitudes on law enforcement do actually help make sense out of his God-awful presidential campaign. Much like he thinks people will comply with his laws, he feels people will just vote for him. He doesn’t have to have good ideas or be appealing in any way because he believes when it comes down to it everyone will cast their ballots for him. Boy is he in for a shock.
