Moonbeam Goes To Washington; Assails Trump Over California Fires

Climate change is a doomsday cult.

Never mind the disastrous liberal policies implemented by one-party Democrat rule that have destroyed California, the wildfires that are ravaging the state are all the fault of President Trump.

At least that is what former Golden State governor Jerry Brown would have Americans believe and on Tuesday, he went on an unhinged rant during an appearance before the House Oversight Committee.

As an adherent of the cult of climate change hysteria which a cloak for socialism, Brown is not only a true believer but recognizes that there is no shortage of suckers who are eager to blame everything on Trump.

It has worked like charm and when Governor Moonbeam spoke while his state burned and the Sacramento politburo’s solution is to shut off power to millions of hapless residents, it was in ugly if not downright apocalyptic terms.

The unhinged career politician wailed:

“California’s burning while the deniers make a joke out of the standards that protect us all”

“The blood is on your soul here and I hope you wake up. Because this is not politics, this is life, this is morality. … This is real.”

Spoken like the high priest of a doomsday cult.

Brown was testifying against efforts by the Trump administration to rescind California’s waiver that previously allowed it to set its own emissions standards for vehicles — effectively giving the state control of the entire auto industry. The administration argues that California’s policy is actually worse for the environment because higher standards make new cars — which are more energy-efficient than old cars — more difficult for consumers to buy.

The ongoing California wildfires have a variety of causes. The immediate cause of the Getty Fire in Los Angeles, for example, appears to be a tree branch that was blown by high winds into power lines, according to the Los Angeles Times. Critics fault California and its utility companies for spending money on complying with “green” initiatives rather than on burying power lines. Others also cite homeless camps, where past fires have started, and poor forestry management policies that have barred the clearing of brush that can provide fuel for wildfires.

But Brown and other Democrats have identified climate change as the cuplrit, even though there is no scientific evidence to support that claim.

Were he honest, Brown could discover who really is to blame for the fires by simply looking in a mirror.

As conservative Rich Lowry points out in a column for the New York Post:

Who cares about something as mundane as properly maintained power lines if something as supposedly epically important — and politically fashionable — as saving the planet from climate change is at stake?

Meanwhile, California has had a decades-long aversion to properly clearing forests. The state’s leaders have long been in thrall to the belief that cutting down trees is somehow an offense against nature, even though thinning helps create healthier forests. Biomass has been allowed to build up, and it becomes the kindling for catastrophic fires.

As Chuck DeVore of the Texas Public Policy Foundation points out, a report of the Western Governors’ Association warned of this effect more than a decade ago, noting that “over time, the fire-prone forests that were not thinned burn in uncharacteristically destructive wildfires.”

In 2016, then-Gov. Jerry Brown actually vetoed a bill that unanimously passed the state legislature to promote the clearing of trees dangerously close to power lines. Brown’s team says this legislation was no big deal, but one progressive watchdog called the bill “neither insignificant nor small.”

On top of all this, more people live in remote areas susceptible to fires, in part because of the high cost of housing in more built-up areas.

There shouldn’t be any doubt that California, susceptible to drought through its history and whipped by fierce, dry winds this time of year, is always going to have a fire problem. But there also shouldn’t be any doubt that dealing with it this poorly is the result of a series of foolish, unrealistic policy choices.

Thanks to former governor Moonbeam, what was once one of the nation’s most advanced and prosperous states has degenerated into a third world hellhole with government-sanctioned blackouts, extreme poverty, rampant homelessness, crime, sexual depravity, corruption and streets of major cities littered with human feces and drug needles.

But it’s all Trump’s fault. Yep, and the moon is made out of green cheese too.
