I said that the two things I expected most from the coronavirus hysteria was that a liberal would accuse Trump of murder over his handling of the virus and that a liberal would warn that the President would cancel the November election over it. Yesterday NBC’s legal analyst made a sad case for Trump to be prosecuted for mishandling the U.S. response to the coronavirus and today Politico is sounding the alarm that the President will use the pandemic as an excuse to cancel the November elections and remain in power forever. Liberals are so predictable.
Here’s a fun Politico headline: Could Trump Try to Cancel the 2020 Election?
When the liberal media asks these types of questions, they are rhetorical. Of course Politico thinks Trump will cancel the election, otherwise they wouldn’t have gone to the trouble to publish this bullshit article.
Enjoy:
Will a president with authoritarian tendencies actually try to suspend a constitutionally mandated presidential election?
If the coronavirus is still largely unchecked this fall, the crowds necessitated by a presidential election would pose a huge threat to public health. Worst of all, because President Donald Trump has repeatedly shown contempt for the rule of law and the spirit of democracy, it’s not unreasonable to worry that he could try to use the pandemic as a pretext to cancel the election and remain in power.
Oh no! That’s sounds horrible. Isn’t there someone who can save us?
Unless Congress acts quickly to provide for nationwide early, absentee and mail-in voting this fall, these fears will surely multiply.
Congress is more on the causing problems side of things than solving them, especially when the problem is nonexistent like this.
The proof Politico offers for claiming Trump will cancel the November election is because Richard Nixon didn’t cancel the 1972 election. No seriously. The entire point of this whacko leftist conspiracy theory is that some people were worried that Nixon was going to cancel the ‘72 election and suspend the Bill of Rights. Nixon of course never did that, but the author claims this proves Trump probably will cancel the 2020 election.
This is what’s known as liberal logic: Because something never happened before, that means it will definitely happen now.
This also a variation on the liberal talking point that Trump is worse than Hitler, only here Trump is worse than Nixon. You see, Nixon was a lawless president but Trump is even more lawless. Nixon never cancelled an election but since Trump is worse, he obviously will.
And just in case anyone thinks it’s irresponsible for Politico to float this ridiculous fact-free theory, they got that covered:
It is very unlikely that Trump could get away with postponing the November elections; who knows if he even wants to try. But as the Nixon example shows, that doesn’t mean we won’t all be talking about this as a live possibility as our crisis worsens. Presidents who make a show of flouting norms and arrogating power shouldn’t be surprised when large portions of the population assumes that when the crunch comes, they’ll do more of the same.
See, it’s totally President Trump’s fault for flouting norms and arrogating power. If he doesn’t want the liberal media accusing him of trying to cancel the election and remain in power, he should flout and arrogate much less.
While Politico seems to think that most Americans are thinking and talking about this, I can assure them we are not. On top of pushing pure bullshit instead of actual news, the liberal media also lives in a weird bubble where they think they speak for the entire country.
