Did you know that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is in a documentary about climate change? Neither did anyone else, as it bombed spectacularly at he box office. No doubt she will attribute this failure to people being afraid of an empowered woman of color or perhaps global warming itself.
Fox News reports that AOC doesn’t quite have the star power she thinks she does:
New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s new climate change documentary debuted in movie theaters over the weekend, generating an abysmal $80 per theater.
The new film, “To the End,” was filmed over four years and follows four young women, Cortez, activist Varshini Prakash, climate policy writer Rhiana Gunn-Wright and political strategist Alexandra Rojas, as they attempt to pass sweeping climate change legislation in Congress.
The film currently boasts an 88% “fresh” critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and does not yet have an audience score.
Since there was no audience, it seems a little ridiculous to expect an audience score.
The film was shown on over 120 screens, but only brought in $9,667. That means probably around 744 people went to see this movie. AOC has like 13 million followers on Instagram but only 744 of them were willing to pay to see her in a movie. Sad.
One of the reasons why this movie flopped is likely due to the fact that people go to the theater to escape the bullshit of real life. In this case the bullshit is bullshit, which clearly drove audiences away. Most of all however, it was a bad idea for a movie if the intent was to have people see it.
Speaking of awful ideas for movies check this out from Deadline:
After drawing interest from several high-profile buyers, Rachel Maddow is partnering with one of the biggest players in town on a feature adaptation of her podcast Rachel Maddow Presents: Ultra. Sources tell Deadline that Amblin Entertainment has optioned film rights to the podcast from MSNBC and Maddow’s production company Surprise Inside. Steven Spielberg and Kristie Macosko Krieger would produce the film for Amblin, along with Maddow and Mike Yarvitz n behalf of Surprise Inside.
A movie version of a Rachel Maddow podcast? I honestly couldn’t think of something less appealing except for maybe a movie version of Hillary Clinton podcast. Or maybe a Hillary Clinton and Rachel Maddow porno.
In retrospect, AOC’s global warming movie doesn’t sound too bad. Actually it does, but I’m applying the “shit plus one” principal here.
I get it that Hollywood is completely out of ideas, but this is ridiculous. At least another comic adaptation, remake, or reboot would bring in an audience and maybe even be watchable. Who in the hell is going to go a see a film based on a Rachel Maddow podcast? The answer is: about the same amount who went to see AOC’s climate change movie.
Here’s an idea for a film that Hollywood can have for free: A really dumb bartender accidentally get’s elected to Congress, and rather than admit she is over her head, she accuses everyone of wanting to have sex with her. The twist is that she’s a supernatural being who needs attention to exist, and when people stop paying attention to her she is banished the realm of vapid idiots.
That’s an Oscar contender right there.
