The details of the charges against them remain sealed, with the FBI declining to comment on the nature of the case.
The couple is expected to face a judge in Brooklyn court on Tuesday, where prosecutors are anticipated to request the unsealing of the indictment.
Linda Sun’s career in state government spans nearly 15 years, beginning as chief of staff for a state lawmaker before taking on various roles in the administration of former Governor Andrew Cuomo.
In September 2021, she was appointed as deputy chief of staff for Governor Hochul, a position she held for about 15 months before transitioning to the New York Department of Labor as deputy commissioner for strategic business development.
However, her tenure there was short-lived. In March 2023, Sun was dismissed following the discovery of misconduct, according to an anonymous source who spoke to the Associated Press. The nature of her alleged wrongdoing has not been publicly disclosed, but the matter was referred to law enforcement at the time.
After her departure from state government, Sun attempted to stay politically active by managing the congressional campaign of Democrat Austin Cheng. However, the campaign was ultimately unsuccessful.
Christopher Hu, Sun’s husband, has his own share of business ventures, including a liquor store in Flushing, Queens, and an LLC tied to medical equipment, a business that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic.
As reported by the New York Post:
The couple’s financial dealings have raised eyebrows, particularly their ability to purchase the luxurious Manhasset home. State payroll records indicate that Sun earned $152,217 in her final full year at the Department of Labor, leaving many to speculate how she and her husband could afford such an extravagant property.
Adding to the intrigue, Sun has been known for her close ties to prominent Queens Democrats, especially within the Asian-American community. Her previous work in the Cuomo administration included serving as a liaison for Asian American affairs and working with Empire State Development, where she focused on building relationships with businesses and coordinating trade missions to South and East Asian countries, including China.
As this high-profile case unfolds, it’s likely to attract significant attention, not just for its potential political ramifications but for the broader questions it raises about corruption and misconduct within state government.
