What, me worry? Pete Buttigieg has finally arrived. The long shot democratic presidential candidates got himself a bonafide nickname from President Trump. Joining Sleepy Joe and Pocahontas, Mayor Pete will forever be known as “Alfred E. Newman.” Buttigieg is in the upper echelon of democratic hopefuls now that Trump has named him after the goofy Mad Magazine mascot. That doesn’t mean he’s going to win, just that he’s above the party bottom-dwellers like Eric Swalwell and that guy who wants to ban circumcision.
In one of the more unexpected things of the year, Trump did an interview with liberal-ass Politico. They wanted to get his take on the democratic party completion for 2020 and the President feels like Joe Biden will be his eventual opponent. Trump wasn’t heaping praise on Biden however and in fact made fun of the former VP for thinking Margaret Thatcher was the current British Prime Minister.
“Is that a good front runner? I don’t know. That was a beauty,” said Trump.
Trump then said he doesn’t see any of the other 20-plus democrats in the race being a serious challenger.
He suggested that he doesn’t see his other Democratic rivals as serious threats. “It seems that many of them aren’t registering with, you know, the public,” Trump said. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), he added, “seems to be going in the wrong direction.”
It’s weird how wrong ideas send you in the wrong direction, isn’t it?
And finally, there was this:
Asked specifically about South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Trump was dismissive.
“Alfred E. Neuman cannot become President of the United States,” Trump said.
He’s right about that and I definitely see the resemblance:
Politico got in touch with Buttigieg and asked him to respond. He of course wussed out and he did it in totally millennial way:
“I’ll be honest. I had to Google that. I guess it’s just a generational thing. I didn’t get the reference. It’s kind of funny, I guess. But he’s also the president of the United States and I’m surprised he’s not spending more time trying to salvage this China deal,” said Buttigieg.
President Trump insulted him by saying he’d never be president because he looks like Alfred E. Newman and Buttigieg’s response was it was kind of funny. He’s wrong, it’s hilarious, but his weak response is the real reason why he’ll never be president.
In reality, Trump took it easy on Buttigieg with this nickname, because there’s really a lot worse things he could have come up with. Buttigieg is the gay mayor of South Bend, IN and has “butt” in his last name. Trump could have called him “Buttplug” “Buttergay” or “Buttbender.”
Buttigieg should feel honored that Trump gave him a nickname because that means he’s on the President’s radar. You don’t hear Trump nicknaming Julian Castro or John Delaney, do you? This however doesn’t mean that Trump thinks Mayor Pete is any kind of a threat. He was asked about Buttigieg and pulled a nickname off the top of his head. If Trump thought Buttigieg was someone who needed to be destroyed, he’d tweet about him.
