What’s The Rate Of Fire For An AR-15? The Liberal Answer May Surprise You

There were a pair of tragic shootings over the weekend which means it’s time for hysterical liberals to vastly overstate the lethal capabilities of “assault weapons.” Generally they give weapons like the AR-15 similar power to tactical nuclear weapons. Following the shootings in El Paso and Dayton, in which the killers used AK-type weapons, the liberals are out crying that semi-automatic AR-15s can fire 1,200 rounds per minute. Not only don’t they know anything about guns, they have no idea how human fingers work.

First up is this from some guy from a gun control group nobody ever heard of:

Really? A semi-automatic rifle can spit lead as fast as a fully-auto machine gun? That’s not true even if the shooter is on crack and having an epileptic seizure.

In what universe can someone discharge 500 rounds a minute from a gun that fires one round per trigger pull? That’s over 8 trigger pulls per second, which sounds as impossible as it is. If I really wanted to waste ammo, I could maybe get off 2 rounds a second, which would be 60 rounds a minute if I didn’t have to stop and change magazines.

This numb nut says I can empty a 30-round magazine in 5 seconds, but he obviously doesn’t know that my trigger finger is bound by the limitations of human anatomy. Again, if I were in a really wasteful mood, it would take me at least 15 seconds to throw away $20 worth of ammo.

Next we have this handy chart from the BBC, meant to shame Americans for have gun ownership rights:

Wow! A semi-automatic AR-15 can fire 1,200 round per minute? And it’s ten times faster than a semi-automatic AK-47 and even faster than a full-auto M-16? This makes the anti-gun nut guy look like a freakin’ firearms expert.

Luckily I own all of these weapons (except the M-16) and can speak from experience as to their actual rates of fire:

I have a Ruger GP-100 .357 Magnum which is close enough to the LCR in that it’s a Ruger revolve. The LCR holds 5-rounds and the GP holds 6. I figure I can get off a shot every 2 seconds because this f*cker kicks like a mule and it takes a second to get it back on target. After firing 6 rounds in 12 seconds, it would then take me about 15 seconds to reload with a speed loader. Using this formula the most rounds I could go through in a minute would be 18, 2 shy of the 20 the BBC claims. Also, realistically after 12 rounds I’d probably give my forearms a rest, cause like I said this mutha kicks.

My Colt semi-auto handgun is a 1911, which has 8-round magazines. I own 3 magazines for this weapon so my maximum output in a minute would be 25 rounds (3 mags, plus one in the chamber to start). That’s about half of the BBC claim.

I have a Saiga semi-automatic rifle which is the California compliant version of the AK-47. It fires the same rounds (7.62) and functions internally exactly as an AK, it just doesn’t have a pistol grip. As a semi-automatic I can fire this exactly as fast as my AR. The only difference is that the rounds are a lot cheaper than .223 so I wouldn’t be as bummed for wasting them. Still, I’d never get close to the 120 rounds a minute the BBC says.

I guess maybe the thing that puzzles me the most here is why are lefties making up shit about the AR-15 when the El Paso and Dayton shooters used AK-type weapons? Shouldn’t they be making up shit about AK-47s?
