Red Flag Laws: This is What the Rest of the Country Can Expect Should They Pass

Let this serve as another warning. On August 19 I wrote an article here about so-called “Red Flag Laws” in Oregon and how our beloved President is leaning towards supporting them as a federal law. In that article I stated a few examples of what can lead to your firearms being seized without a trial. Now here’s a specific example of that insidious and unconstitutional law at work.

Remarks against Antifa prompt FBI seizure of former Marine’s weapons under Oregon’s ‘red flag’ law: reports

A former Marine who said at a protest that he would “slaughter” Antifa members in self-defense, if attacked, recently had his five weapons confiscated by the FBI, according to reports.

Did you catch that part about self-defense? I see nothing wrong with that statement. We have a right to defend ourselves, but apparently the FBI doesn’t think so.

The temporary seizure came through the use of Oregon’s “red flag” law, which allows law enforcement agencies and family members to seek a court order to have weapons taken away from an individual viewed as potentially violent. Such laws are often opposed by supporters of Second Amendment gun rights.

The former Marine, Shane Kohfield, 32, was not charged with any crime, but surrendered five guns, including an AR-15 rifle . . .

Oooooh, scary! An AR-15! I just love how they chose to specifically mention that rifle. I’m surprised that the mere ownership of an AR doesn’t trigger the red flag law. Knowing liberals, sooner or later it probably will.

. . . according to Phil Lemman, Oregon’s acting deputy state court administrator, the Washington Examiner reported.

The action was reportedly prompted by remarks Kohfield made in public during a demonstration outside the home of Portland, Ore., Mayor Ted Wheeler in August, the Oregonian/OregonLive reported.

“If Antifa gets to the point where they start killing us, I’m going to kill them next,” Kohfield told a crowd, according to the Oregonian. “I’d slaughter them, and I have a detailed plan on how I would wipe out Antifa.”

There’s the whole statement. And once again, anyone with a clear head can see it was all about self-defense. “IF Antifa gets to the point where they start killing us.” It wasn’t “I’m going to slaughter Antifa.” Read it as “IF Antifa starts a war, I will defend myself.” And for that, he loses his guns without due process.

Kohfield previously wrote to U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, a former Navy SEAL, to share his concern about Antifa and voice his support for having the group declared a terrorist organization, a step that President Trump has considered.

The President should stop considering this and just make it happen.

Portland has been the site of frequent violent clashes between members of far-left Antifa and supporters of conservative groups such as Proud Boys. The mayor and other city officials have faced criticism for their handling of such events.

If there are Antifa members being violent, and there most certainly are, shouldn’t all of them be made victims of the red flag law as well? I mean if a guy who merely stated he will defend himself if attacked gets his property confiscated, shouldn’t those who have already committed violent acts have their weapons seized as well?

Based on the court order, Kohfield – who served two tours of duty in Iraq — was committed to a veterans hospital for 20 days and was barred from participating in subsequent protests in Portland.

So not only has he lost (hopefully only temporarily) his 2nd Amendment rights, they’ve also taken away his 1st Amendment rights!

According to the Oregonian, Kohfield conceded that he probably appeared threatening to other people, but he never intended to cause harm.

“I looked unhinged,” he told the newspaper. “I looked dangerous and have the training to be dangerous.”

Shane Kohfield

Well, no. The training part aside, he doesn’t look unhinged to me and he really doesn’t look very scary to me either.

As serious as this is, I can’t resist some humor here . . .

I guess Shane skipped war face training. You didn’t scare me. Work on it.

The FBI would not comment about the case, the Oregonian reported. It was unclear when Kohfield’s weapons would be returned to him.

The FBI wouldn’t comment about trampling on someone’s 2A rights. There is so much wrong with that.

The Oregon Legislature narrowly passed the state’s red-flag law in 2017, with no Republican support in the House and backing from only one Republican in the Senate. Gov. Kate Brown, a [edit: hideous, raging, far-left, bi-sexual, moronic] Democrat, signed the bill into law on Aug. 15 of that year and the law took effect Jan. 1, 2018.

So here we see a real-life example of what many would love to see as a federal law. There is no way we can allow this to happen. Tell the President himself by clicking here. For those unwilling to click the red button there, the letter reads:

Please understand that I say this with all sincerity: I believe you are getting the wrong advice.

Right now, some people are trying to tell you that unless you ban AK-47s or AR-15s, or as the media calls them, “assault weapons,” you will lose re-election in 2020. They are telling you that our country needs to pass red flag laws, which confiscate guns from law-abiding Americans.

I’m afraid the opposite is true.

You were elected in 2016 on a promise to protect the Second Amendment. You won thanks to gun owners in states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, Iowa, Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, and Wisconsin who believed you when you promised to protect our God-given rights.

There is no compromise you can make with the anti-gunners to ever win over their trust, support, or votes. When you give them an inch, they come back for a foot.

We need you to stand strong on your campaign promises and remember the pledge you made to gun owners who voted for you.

“Red Flag” Gun Confiscation Orders have already resulted in the death of good people like Gary Willis of Maryland.

And I hope that you will never consider a ban on commonly-owned firearms such as AR-15s, as that will violate the Constitution and trigger a slippery slope of other gun bans. One only needs to recall instances where so-called “assault weapons” SAVED lives to see how valuable these firearms are for self-defense:

A Houston man fired several rounds while fighting off five home invaders this year, using his AK-47 as his primary means of defense;
A Florida man utilized his AR-15 to fire 30 rounds while fighting off seven intruders; and,
A very petite Maryland mom chased three burglars out of her home simply by charging her AR-15.

Mr. President, please do not fall for the anti-gunners’ traps by imposing new gun control legislation.
