An inmate at a Florida prison was beaten to death by a corrections officer while handcuffed. If a black criminal is killed by a cop while resisting arrest means we have to burn down cities and loot Target stores, then this must require some kind of a nuclear weapons response. Oh wait, never mind. It turns out this inmate was white. Call off the riots. It’s only an outrage when this kind of thing happens to a black person.
The Miami Herald reports:
Christopher Howell was less than halfway into a four-year sentence at Lake Correctional Institution, a men’s prison near Orlando, when he died. He was serving time for stealing four phone chargers from a West Palm Beach Target.
He did not die of old age, by suicide or of COVID-19, a disease that has taken the lives of 19 inmates across the Florida prison system.
Howell, 51, was killed at the hands of a corrections officer, who beat him while the inmate’s hands were cuffed, multiple prison sources said.
The brutal beating happened Thursday. The Florida Department of Corrections says he was pronounced dead Friday at an area hospital.
Howell was beaten by the corrections officer after refusing a command in his cell and while he was still in handcuffs as two other officers watched but did not intervene, according to inmates and one officer who still works at the prison.
The details of the beating are unclear, but multiple people said Howell was left with a broken neck and was dead shortly after the assault, despite attempts to revive him.
Somehow this gets worse because Howell was mentally disabled. The affidavit from his arrest lists him as “disabled” with a “juvenile disposition.”
One inmate, who is serving 27 years for various drug-related charges, said he used to live in a cell directly across from Howell, whom he described as a “good kid” with the “mind of a 10-year-old boy.” He described Howell as a “chubby dude” who is not someone who could defend himself.
The Department of Corrections hasn’t released the names of the officers involved, but they have put them on administrative leave pending an investigation. Wouldn’t it be something if the officer who beat Howell to death was black? Well, it would be something of the races were reversed and you can bet your ass the prison would have released the name of a white officer accused of beating a black inmate to death.
Of all of the people killed by law enforcement recently and over the past few years, this is one of the worst stories there is. A mentally handicapped man in handcuffs was beaten to death while other officers stood around watching. This should be huge news and a national outrage. It’s not however because the fake news industry isn’t interested in law enforcement killing white guys.
All of the Targets are safe and leftists won’t be taking over a piece of downtown Miami to establish a cop-free zone. Al Sharpton won’t be using his frequent grievance miles to fly down to Florida for a justice march/shakedown. On the outside chance that a small protest arises out of this, the liberal media will condemn the marchers for not respecting social distancing rules. No democrats will take a knee draped in Larry the Cable Guy scarves and no fake news journalists will demand that Republicans say Christopher Howell’s name or affirm that white lives matter.
