How Israel Went from Helping Create HAMAS to Bombing It, Suspected CIA Involvement Too

We know Hamas is a terrorist group, proscribed both by the United States and the European Union.

We know Hamas has sworn to destroy Israel.

We also know Hamas rules Gaza with an iron fist, and that this terrorist group has killed hundreds of innocent Israelis with rocketmortar, and suicide attacks.

This from theintercept.com.

But how many of us also know that HAMAS—which is an Arabic acronym for “Islamic Resistance Movement”—would probably not exist today were it not for the Jewish state? And that the Israelis helped turn a bunch of fringe Palestinian Islamists in the late 1970s into one of the world’s most notorious militant groups?

Yes, this is true, and Hamas is blowback

for the twisted machinations of Israel and the CIA.

During the early 1970s the greatest enemy to Israel was known as the Palestinian Liberation Organizaion, which was known for waging terror attacks on Israeli civilians and targets all over the world.

The PLO was known for being a Socialist organization whose sole purpose was the elimination of the state of Israel along with the establishment of a socialist state of Palestine where the constitution would be run by secular Marxism rather than Islam.

Due to the short sightedness of the Rabin administration and later Begin there was an idea to bring about a branch of the Muslim Brotherhood into Gaza and the Palestinian territories to counterbalance the strength and popularity of the PLO.

Just like the United States was funding the Taliban to fight in Afghanistan against the Soviets to bring down the communists so too was Israel selling Arms to Iran to fight their archenemy Iraq during the early eighties.

Islamic fundamentalism was not seen as a threat to world peace, instead it was Marxists terrorists around the world who were seen as a threat, so moslem extremists were seen as natural allies against Godless communists.

A precursor to Hamas was the Muslim Brotherhood who were persecuted by the secular Ba’athist government of Egypt to the point their leader Sayyid Qutb was executed by the Egyptian government in 1966.

Egypt and secular socialist Arab governments were at war at the time against Islamic extremism so the Israelis saw them as a natural ally against their common enemy.

Many Israeli government officials saw the improvement of the quality of life in the Palestinian territories as a way to prevent radicalization of the Arab residents so in 1979 Mujama Al Islamiyah [was granted] the status as a charity organization with the ability to be able to raise millions of dollars in decades.

Brig. Gen. Yitzhak Segev, who was the Israeli military governor in Gaza in the early 1980s, told a New York Times reporter that he had helped finance the Palestinian Islamist movement as a “counterweight” to the secularists and leftists of the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Fatah party, led by Yasser Arafat who himself referred to Hamas as “a creature of Israel.”

General Segev even admits to funding Hamas with Israeli taxpayers money that was later used to kill the same people who were funding them.

So, Israel created this monster—HAMAS—but at what point did they realize they would eventually have to take action against their creation?

 – Afterall, Israel cannot co-exist with a terror state inside itself that is an existential threat to its own citizenry.

Further unanswered questions:

 – When did Israel realize they would one day have to deal with the complete elimination of Hamas?

 – Did Israel know that while this is being accomplished, international support will create a public backlash against its soldiers killing civilians even if they are positioned by Hamas to become collateral damage?

 – And did Israel realize Jews everywhere around the world would be attacked by pro-Hamas and pro-Palestinian demonstrators and radicals as a result of their self-defensive retaliations?

Avner Cohen, a former Israeli religious affairs official who worked in Gaza for more than two decades, told the Wall Street Journal in 2009:

Hamas, to my great regret, is Israel’s creation.

In the mid-1980s, Cohen even wrote an official report to his superiors warning them not to play divide-and-rule in the Occupied Territories, by backing Palestinian Islamists against Palestinian secularists.

He wrote:

I … suggest focusing our efforts on finding ways to break up this monster before this reality jumps in our face.

They did not listen to him.

And Hamas, was the result. To be clear: First, the Israelis helped build up a militant strain of Palestinian political Islam, in the form of Hamas and its Muslim Brotherhood precursors; then, the Israelis switched tack and tried to bombbesiege, and blockade it out of existence.

In the past decade alone, Israel has gone to war with Hamas three times—in 2009, 2012, and 2014—killing approximately 2,500 Palestinian civilians in Gaza in the process. Meanwhile, Hamas has killed far more Israeli civilians than any secular Palestinian militant group. This is the human cost of blowback.

David Hacham, a former Arab affairs expert in the Israeli military who was based in Gaza in the 1980s, stated:

When I look back at the chain of events, I think we made a mistake. But at the time, nobody thought about the possible results.

On January 9, 2009, Congressman Ron Paul spoke before Congress about the creation of Hamas, al-Qaeda, and promoting a radicalization of Islam to support a war against Russia.

NOTE: The CIA was also mentioned as having been involved in radicalizing Islam.

Below is Rep. Ron Paul’s 2:32 min statement.
