Sanctuary cities, counties and states have policies to refuse cooperation with federal immigration officials when detaining illegal immigrants. Instead of turning these invaders over to ICE for deportation proceedings, these sanctuary places set the violent criminals loose on the unsuspecting public. The stated purpose of sanctuary policy is to make communities safer, which is as ridiculous as saying the best way to protect the chickens is to let a fox loose in the henhouse. Once again sanctuary policies claimed an American victim as an illegal immigrant, out on bond for a violent assault, killed a woman in Texas on Thanksgiving.
KFOX 14 reports that around 2am Thursday morning school teacher Amanda “Mandy” Ferguson Weyant was in the crosswalk of an El Paso, TX street when 24-year-old Joel Velazquez came barreling down the road. He blew through a red light and hit Mandy with such force that she flew 50 feet. Velazquez never even slowed down, speeding from the scene and leaving Mandy to die.
“I saw where my daughter was hit and where her body was 50 feet from the point of contact. He didn’t even attempt to stop to render aid,” said Mandy’s father Dan Ferguson.
Two days later on Saturday, Mandy’s family learned that Velazquez turned himself in, which was kind of a relief but additional information about the suspect was infuriating. First, Velazquez is in this country illegally and should have never been driving on a US street. Second, he was out on bond for a violent arrest and should never have been out of jail or driving on a US street.
There isn’t much information on Velazquez’s criminal history but Breitbart reports that he was arrested in 2017 and charged with assault causing bodily injury, which sure sounds like a felony. In that case he was allowed to bond out of jail while awaiting trial.
It’s unclear where Velazquez was arrested and charged, but considering that he’s an illegal immigrant accused of a violent felony, whatever jurisdiction it was most certainly has sanctuary policies. El Paso, where Velazquez killed Mandy Weyant, is a sanctuary city that sued the state of Texas to preserve its shameful status as a haven for illegal immigrant scumbags.
With regards to Velazquez’s immigration status, Mandy’s family is sick to their stomachs.
“It just doesn’t add up, it doesn’t seem to be fair,” said her father. “This man, because of his careless actions, has destroyed a complete family.”
Mandy was a beloved 6th grade teacher at Eastwood Heights Elementary School in El Paso. Her family is devastated and would like to see some non-santuary city justice.
“He’s destroyed my family. My daughter, Mandy, was the glue that held my family in place, she was my everything. She was my world, she was my wife’s best friend but she was my baby girl,” said her father.
For killing Mandy, Velazquez now sits in an El Paso detention facility, severely under-charged for “an accident involving death.” Really? How about felony hit and run? What about vehicular manslaughter? Velazquez was given a $125,000 bond, which means he could be out on the streets again if he can come up with as little as 10% of that.
ICE has placed a detainer on Velazquez, but that might not mean anything. As already stated, El Paso is a sanctuary city that doesn’t cooperate with ICE detainers. This illegal immigrant criminal could be back in the community killing Americans in no time.
These sanctuary policies will continue to put Americans in danger until a victim’s family successfully sues a jurisdiction for releasing a violent illegal immigrant. Whatever judge, police department, or municipality that released Joel Velazquez has Mandy Weyant’s blood on their hands and should have to pay for her death. Liberals don’t know the difference between right and wrong, but they might get the hint of they had to pay a multi-million dollar judgement.
