Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi love illegal immigration so much they shut down the government for a month rather than fund some modest border security. With a “compromise” spending bill that only allocated 1.3 billion for border barriers, President Trump declared a national emergency on Friday to get the border wall built. Naturally Schumer and Pelosi lost their minds over the President using his Constitutional authority to address a pressing national security issue because once again, Trump wins.
Here’s a joint statement from Schumer and Pelosi full of lies and tears:
The President’s unlawful declaration over a crisis that does not exist does great violence to our Constitution and makes America less safe, stealing from urgently needed defense funds for the security of our military and our nation. This is plainly a power grab by a disappointed President, who has gone outside the bounds of the law to try to get what he failed to achieve in the constitutional legislative process.
See, actually the President does have the power to declare a national emergency. The National Emergencies Act of 1976 gave the president the power to declare a national emergency in 136 distinct areas without Congressional approval. A foreign invasion, a humanitarian crisis, and and a public health crisis are all covered by this, so Trump is on firm legal ground in declaring one over our porous Southern border.
Another lie from the democrats is that Trump will be taking money away from our military to pay for the wall, which makes us less safe. Here’s a breakdown of where Trump will be drawing funds from CNN:
$1.375 billion from the Homeland Security appropriations bill. This money cannot be used to build a wall but can be used to build other types of border barriers due to the way the bill is written
$600 million from the Treasury Department’s drug forfeiture fund, which would come from an executive action
$2.5 billion from the Defense Department’s drug interdiction program, which would come from an executive action
$3.5 billion from the Defense Department’s military construction budget, which would require a national emergency
That last one is military-related, but doesn’t take money away from our combat readiness or defensive capabilities. It’s from a military construction fund that gets around $10.5 billion annually. Instead of building a new base in the middle of nowhere that we don’t need, a wall will go up to keep scumbags out of our country and that makes us all much safer.
The deal with national emergencies is that the President has the power to declare them, but Congress is supposed to review them every couple of years to see if they are still legitimate. This is something Congress never does as we are currently under 31 states of emergency.
The funniest thing about the Schmer/Pelosi bitch-fest is this paragraph:
We call upon our Republican colleagues to join us to defend the Constitution. Just as both parties honored our oath to protect the American people by passing the conference committee bill, the Congress on a bipartisan basis must honor the Constitution by defending our system of checks and balances.
It’s weird how when democrats are trying to pass gun control laws or forcing socialism down our throats that they aren’t concerned with their oath to protect the Constitution, but when Trump is trying to stop a foreign invasion of crime and drugs, suddenly they give a shit about it.
The President is not above the law. The Congress cannot let the President shred the Constitution.
Remember when Barack Obama was literally writing laws with executive action and Pelosi and Schumer were all up in arms about him disrupting the checks and balances while shedding the Constitution? Yeah, me neither. It’s almost like they have selective outrage with a partisan agenda or something.
What this boils down to is the democratic leadership pitching a fit because the President is using his Constitutional powers to get something done that the democrats in Congress refuse to do. Not only does Trump win, he gets shit done and that makes Nancy lie and Chuck cry.
Update: In the time it took me to write and publish this, Nancy Pelosi has pulled this statement from her website. Was it the lying or the crying that made her yank this piece of shit?
