Wow. The coronavirus is almost as good of a gun salesman as Barack Obama. Spurred by liberal media fearmongering and doomsaying, Americans bought nearly 2 million guns in the month of March. This would have been the busiest month ever for gun purchases if it weren’t for Obama threatening to take our guns after some mass shootings that wouldn’t have been stopped by gun control. Don’t worry, Barry, you’re still the GOAT.
Here’s something the New York Times is reporting like its a bigger catastrophe than the coronavirus:
Americans bought about two million guns in March, according to a New York Times analysis of federal data. It was the second-busiest month ever for gun sales, trailing only January 2013, just after President Barack Obama’s re-election and the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
With some people fearful that the pandemic could lead to civil unrest, gun sales have been skyrocketing. In the past, fear of gun-buying restrictions has been the main driver of spikes in gun sales, far surpassing the effects of mass shootings and terrorist attacks alone.
Sales rose sharply in December 2015 after Mr. Obama sought to make it harder to buy assault weapons after the terrorist attack in San Bernardino, Calif. And in January 2013, the heaviest sales came after a call for new restrictions in the wake of the Sandy Hook shooting.
The funny thing is, the NYT doesn’t see any parallels here. Obama and the democrats threaten sweeping gun control laws and people react by stockpiling weapons. The liberal media tells everyone the coronavirus will kill millions, wiping out civilization, and people react by stockpiling weapons. I can’t be the only one to see a common thread here.
For a group of people who supposedly want less guns in private hands, liberals sure are awesome at getting more people buy more guns. Has anyone ever checked to see if democrats and the liberal media are secretly working for the gun manufacturers?
I would like to point out a couple of factual errors in this NYT piece: First, there wasn’t necessarily 2 million guns sold in March, just 2 million background checks were performed. The background checks could have been for gun permits and even ammo purchases in places like California. Still, there’s no doubt Americans bought a shitload of guns last month.
Second, Obama didn’t try to make it harder to buy “assault weapons,” he wanted to ban the sale and possession of all semi-automatic rifles. There’s a huge distinction there.
Another thing that the NYT left out as a driver of gun sales is that many liberal states tried to or did use the coronavirus to close down gun stores. During a national emergency like this, even the threat of cutting off the guns and ammo supplies creates a panic buying situation.
If liberals think March was bad, just wait until those coronavirus relief checks start rolling out. I have to imagine there is a decent percentage of the population that will use their stimulus checks to buy a guy just to spite the democrats. Nancy Pelosi’s Twitter will be filled with people showing off their new guns with messages of thanks.
