We’ve reached the point where leftists are demanding that everything that offends them be deleted from the universe. The latest outrage is that Boston University hockey team’s mascot “Rhett” is racist because he shares the name of Clark Gable’s character in Gone With The Wind, which has already been cancelled. There’s no evidence that this particular mascot, which is a Boston terrier, is named after the character, but as was already pointed out, everything must go!
The Boston Herald brings the latest liberal outrage:
Amid a national on reckoning on race, Boston University will consider whether to rename its mascot, “Rhett,” due to the name’s ties to “Gone with the Wind,” the novel and movie that has been criticized for its portrayal of slavery.
BU President Robert A. Brown said he will form a committee to determine whether “Rhett,” the nickname of the school’s Boston terrier mascot and a reference to one of the story’s main characters, Rhett Butler, should be retired.
The university’s use of the name Rhett refers both to the fictional character in “Gone with the Wind” and to the school’s main color, scarlet, which doubles as the name of Butler’s love interest in the novel, Scarlett O’Hara.
Clearly actresses Scarlett Johansson and Maureen O’Hara need to be cancelled as well. We can’t risk the possibility of racism by allowing them to exist.
“A number of you have pointed out that our mascot’s nickname, ‘Rhett,’ pays tribute to a fictional character associated with the Confederacy, slavery, and sexual assault, and that has prompted important conversations,” said BU president Brown.
Wait, Gone With The Wind is rapey too? That must be in the director’s cut because I don’t recall any sexual assault.
“Despite this seemingly cute connection between the movie and our mascot’s name, the fact is that the movie’s portrayal of the American Civil War, postwar reconstruction, and slavery is offensive. And it is reasonable for people to question why, at a university founded by abolitionists, we have a mascot nicknamed for a character in a film whose racist depictions are completely at odds with our own tradition,” said Brown.
Is it weird that the president of a major university has no idea what the word “reasonable” means?
Brown has tapped the dean of the College of Fine Arts and the vice president for alumni relations to assemble a committee of students, faculty, alumni and athletics representatives to weigh the issue and offer a recommendation by mid-October.
Who is better suited to make a decision on racism than the dean of fine arts? I guess probably anyone, but for some reason I’m not in charge of Boston U to stop this silliness in its tracks.
The BU president says the hockey team’s mascot is named after Rhett Butler from Gone With The Wind, but there is no evidence to support that. He’s a Boston terrier at a New New England school, so chances are he’s not glorifying slavery or the Civil War era South.
If anything associated with Gone With The Wind has to be cancelled because it’s racist, here are a few places to start.
Female comedian Brett Butler needs to go for obvious reasons.
Tara Reid should be banished because Scarlett O’Hara’s estate is called “Tara.”
The city of Atlanta needs to be burned to the ground since that’s the setting of the film.
Earth, Wind, and Fire should be removed from iTunes and all streaming services because…you know “wind” and whatnot.
Most of all, Hattie McDaniel, the first black woman to win an Acedmy Award, should be posthumously stripped of her Oscar to permanently fix racism.
Every day I keep thing that we’ve reached peak-idiocy and then the next day brings something even dumber. I predict that tomorrow, leftists will be demanding the sun be destroyed because it brings lightness, which is obviously associated with white supremacy.
