Couple Who Sold U.S. Nuclear Sub Secrets Suffered From Trump Derangement Syndrome

Trump Derangement Syndrome is a lot like COVID-19 in that it affects people in different ways. Some TDS sufferers threatened extreme violence and death to anyone on the other side while others threw hissy fits and self-mutilated over the former President. A couple in Maryland had TDS so bad, they tried to sell U.S. nuclear submarine secrets to a foreign government.

Jonathan Toebbe was a nuclear engineer with the U.S. Navy. His wife was a teacher at a private school in Annapolis, Maryland. Inspired by the Rosenbergs, the couple decided to try to sell U.S. nuclear submarine technology as well as other classified secrets to a foreign government.

In April 2020, Jonathan sent a packet a restricted Navy documents to an unnamed foreign government with instructions on how they could get more goodies for the right price. Over the next several months, Jonathan and his wife passed nuclear secrets on SD memory cards to someone they thought was an operative from that unnamed foreign government. One time they even passed data on nuclear submarine reactors stashed inside a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

In exchange for these secrets, the Toebbes were given $100,000 in crypto currency. It was a solid plan except the person they were giving the secrets to was an undercover FBI agent. They were arrested and charged with espionage.

The story takes a weird turn because the Toebbes may have been at least partially motived to betray their country due to an irrational hatred of former President Donald Trump.

The NY Post reports:

The Maryland couple accused of trying to sell secrets about US nuclear submarines — using a peanut butter sandwich to hide an SD memory card — were worried about their finances and were furious when Donald Trump was elected, friends and co-workers said.

Federal prosecutors have not revealed what may have motivated the Toebbes, but two dozen friends and colleagues told the New York Times the couple had stewed over money and US politics within the last decade.

Diana, who is a teacher at the private Key School in Annapolis, Maryland, sometimes complained about her $60,000 salary and once told a student, “I’m not doing this for the money.”

She also seemed “genuinely distraught” when Trump was elected in 2016 and spoke of leaving the US, another student told the outlet.

I’m sure they did it for the money but I also don’t have any problem believing they justified it by seeing it as a way to destroy Donald Trump. It’s on par with the kind of crazy behavior associated with TDS:

Julias and Ethel Rosenberg sold U.S. nuclear weapons technology to the former Soviet Union and were executed for espionage. Sure, that was 70 years ago but the law hasn’t changed. The sentence for giving U.S. secrets to a foreign government is either life in prison or execution.

This is the biggest TDS self-own in the history of TDS. The Toebbes have effectively thrown away their lives to knock Donald Trump down a peg. Nice one, morons.
