The Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young song “Ohio” is about an incident in which National Guard troops shot and killed 4 protesters at Kent State University. Neil Young has now updated this classic hippy anthem to attack the NRA. Clearly he doesn’t see the irony that he’s using a song about government tyranny to go after a group that fights for our rights to oppose government tyranny. Hey, he’s a lefty loon so his outrage doesn’t have to make sense, plus he’s Canadian so he’s as kooky as he wants to be.
On May 4, 1970 a bunch of hippies were protesting the Vietnam War and more specifically the US secret bombing campaign in Cambodia, on the campus of Kent State. Back then they used to deal with civil unrest by calling in the riot squad and the National Guard, instead of giving rioters “space to destroy.” There were around 70 National Guard troops on hand to put down this uprising and for some reason they started firing on the protesters. After the smoke cleared, 4 protesters were dead and 9 more were injured.
In 1971, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young wrote the song “Ohio” which was in reaction to the Kent State shooting. Neil Young wrote the lyrics which were very critical of the government and then-President Richard Nixon.
In 2018, Young worked up this video of himself performing Ohio, which considering that he had the worst voice in Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young is bad enough, but at the end of the song, the crowd chants “never again” and images of people protesting gun rights are flashed.
I guess the video wasn’t self-explanatory enough, so Young further explained the video on his website. Don’t bother visiting it, you have to sign up to see it, which I did so you don’t have to.
Today we see what we have become.
With no real laws protecting us from guns, and with politicians supporting the NRA because the NRA supports them, we are not well represented.
Give us common sense gun laws that protect our people, in schools, in places of worship, in the workplace and on the streets. VOTE.
Why the hell would we need laws to protect us from guns? We need guns to protect us from scumbags and tyranny and we already have a law for that called the 2nd Amendment of the US Constitution.
This wasn’t much of a protest since Young had to further explain his video, but the bottom line is he’s using this song to attack the NRA.
Stay with me on this one, Neil: The song Ohio is about armed government troops killing unarmed Americans. The NRA fights to protect our gun ownership rights so that in case the government ever turns on the people they can fight back. Do you see any problem here?
A more appropriate update to Ohio would be to attack the liberals and democrats who want to disarm the American people, leaving only the government with guns. If you think Kent State was bad, imagine what it would be like if the democrats get their way and take all of our guns. Not only would we be defenseless against criminals, who won’t follow any gun control laws, the government could oppress us with no resistance.
I’m almost certain this is what the democrats are going for with gun control in the first place. They want to get rid of the guns and be in charge so they can impose their whacko ideology on the entire country without fear of armed opposition. It sure was nice of a grumpy old Canadian like Neil Young to help the democrats usher in this new age of American oppression, wasn’t it?
