43 people were shot with 8 fatalities in Chicago over the Labor Day weekend, which barely qualifies as news at this point. What is newsworthy is the city’s democratic mayor blamed the violence on Republicans and a lack of gun control. Huh? Chicago is a liberal city in a liberal state with more gun control than you could shake a Constitution stick at. How could all of this bloodshed be the fault of Republicans or not enough gun control? The answer is even dumber than the accusation.
This begins with Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz pointing out the futility of gun control laws:

Which prompted Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot to offer this insane response:

I don’t think this proves what Lightfoot thinks it does. The problem isn’t that others states respect people’s right to keep and bear arms, it’s that Illinois makes it too hard for people to exercise their Constitutional rights. What it does prove is that criminals don’t obey the laws and will always find a way to get their hands on guns no matter how much gun ownership is prohibited.
If there were any validity to Lightfoot’s claim that Chicago’s violence is because other states, run by Republicans, have lax gun laws, those other states would have the same level of gun-related crime as the Windy City but they don’t. Her premise is that a lack of gun control laws equals gun violence, but none of those Republican states she cited have nearly the carnage that Chicago has. And for that matter, most of the rest of the state of Illinois isn’t bad like Chiraq.
No, the violence in Chicago is a uniquely Chicago problem and it exists because the city has been run by corrupt democrats, imposing shitty liberal rule, for generations.
In Chicago, good people don’t have the right to defend themselves and the bad guys have no fear of law enforcement. When the cops arrest a felon in possession of an illegal firearm, the city doesn’t even prosecute and these scumbags are right back out on the street. It doesn’t take an expert criminologist to see the problem here: defenseless citizens plus above-the-law criminals equals 43 shot and 8 killed every weekend.
Lightfoot specifically blames Ted Cruz and his state for all of the violence in her city, but if you notice by her silly graphic, only 1.8% of the guns recovered in Chicago come from Texas. They could drop gun crime by more than that by simply prosecuting felons in possession of firearms for one single weekend.
Lastly, mayor Lightfoot ended the debate by telling Ted Cruz he is not allowed to utter the name “Chicago.” She commands him to “keep our name out of your mouth.” Trust me, Cruz, like the rest of us, would like to keep Lori Lightfoot out of his mouth, but as a U.S. Senator and free American citizen he’s allowed to say the name of a major city and even offer his opinions on crime and Constitutional rights.
It’s not surprising that the same liberals who don’t respect the 2nd Amendment right of gun ownership also hate the 1st Amendment right of free speech. The only way they can suppress the right to keep and bear arms is by shutting down the discussion.
